Engaging with the Bible

(See also Your Lent Calendar – below)

Sundays

On Sunday mornings during Lent the 8am and 10am Eucharist at St Mary’s will offer sermons on themes that will help us understand what the Bible is, and how it can nourish us and enlighten and inform us. The 11am Eucharist at St Anne’s will explore the same themes with DVD clips to stimulate discussion in small groups.

On Sunday evenings during Lent, in the context of Evensong at 6.30pm at St Mary’s, lay members of our congregations will speak about a passage from the Bible that is particularly meaningful for them:

  • Sunday March 5th – Nigel Blakey
  • Sunday March 12th – Tammy Tearoe
  • Sunday March 19th – Neil Greenhalgh
  • Sunday March 26th – Liz Blakey
  • Sunday April 2nd – Julia Kilby

Why not try a different service from the one you normally attend?

Monday

Monday 13 March, 7:30 – 9:00 p.m. A Contemplative Approach to the Wisdom Books, focusing on the Wisdom of Solomon. This single session, led by Peter Alcock, takes place in the committee room at St Anne’s Hall and will include a short talk introducing the Wisdom texts, contemplative engagement with the texts, and opportunity for creative interaction.

Tuesdays

Four Tuesday Evening Bible Studies on the Book of Acts, March 7th, 14th, 21st & 28th, 7:30 – 9:00 p.m. in St Mary’s West Room, refreshments available from 7:15 p.m.

These four sessions, led by Revd Christopher Aardagh-Walter, assume no prior knowledge, all welcome.

Tuesday 4 April, 7:30 p.m., ‘Exploring The Last Supper’: an evening where we can explore the Jewish roots of the Last Supper and how it relates to the Feast of Passover. All welcome for a meal when Rabbi Margaret Jacobi from Birmingham Progressive Synagogue leads our exploration.

As we approach Holy Week together, hopefully this will help deepen our understanding and make our weekly Eucharist a more meaningful experience. For catering purposes we do need to know to numbers - please sign up.

Download the flyer for this event.

Wednesdays

Four Wednesday evenings offering the opportunity to engage with the Bible through art, film, drama and creative writing. Each session ‘stands alone’ and will be participative, so you are welcome to attend just one, or try all of them. No expertise or prior experience needed, just the willingness to come ready to join in and ’ have a go’ . Refreshments will be available during each session.

Wednesday 8 March, 7:30 – 9:30 p.m. in St Mary’s West Room, Engaging with the Bible through art, led by Steph Evans.

Wednesday 15 March, 7:30 – 9:30 p.m. in St Mary’s West Room, Engaging with the Bible through film, led by Revd Duncan Strathie & Revd Hazel White.

Wednesday 22 March, 7:30 – 9:30 p.m. in St Anne’s Church, Engaging with the Bible through drama, led by John Gray.

Wednesday 29 March, 7:30 – 9:30 p.m. in St Mary’s West Room, Engaging with the Bible through creative writing and poetry, led by Nicola Slee.

Silentspace takes place every Wednesday evening at 6pm in St Mary’s Church. Each session begins with a short period of Lectio (meditative reading of the text) based on the Hebrew Scriptures which during Lent will be from Genesis, Psalms, Song of Songs and the opening verses of the Gospel of John, one per session, for approximately 15-20 minutes. This is followed by a period of silence for approximately 20-30 minutes, and then a concluding prayer and blessing.

Thursdays

Five Thursday Mornings looking at ‘hard sayings of Jesus in the Gospels’, March 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd and April 6th. Sessions will be led by Revd Caroline George and will use a ‘York Course’ which combines input via CD from well-known theologians with Bible Study and opportunities for discussion. Sessions run from 10:15 – 11:30 a.m. and will be held in St Anne’s choir vestry (access via the side of St Anne’s Church near door to church hall).

Fridays

Four Friday afternoon Contextual Bible Studies on the Gospel Passage set for Sunday mornings in Lent, March 10th 17th 24th & 31st. Sessions will be led by Karen Wenell and run from 1:00 – 2:30 p.m. in St Mary’s West Room. Refreshments available at the beginning. Contextual Bible Study is an approach to reading the Bible that encourages us to read the text in relation to our own lives and the context in which we live. Come to just one to give it a go, or come to several.

Saturdays

Saturday 11 March: 10am until 4pm, Benefice Quiet Day, to be held at Riverside House, 21 Alcester Road, Moseley. The day will be led by Revd Hazel White and will provide the opportunity for us to take a step back and to prayerfully engage with the Bible as God’s story interwoven with our story. Further details and booking forms on the welcome desks in St Mary’s & St Anne’s.

Saturday 1 April: an Introduction to the Book of Revelation, led by Revd Duncan Strathie, 10am until 3:30 p.m., St Anne’s choir vestry room.

Journeying with Matthew, James Woodward, Paula Gooder & Mark Pryce (SPCK, £9.99) - a book aiming to help individuals and groups to understand and use Matthew’s Gospel. This book’s unique slant is that it asks readers to use their imagination ‘to bring the Gospel to life’ as they visualize themselves in the scenes that Matthew describes.

Glimpses of Glory: The Mowbray Lent Book 2017 David Bryant (Bloomsbury Continuum £9.99) – 40 readings offering a reflection a day for Lent, drawing on poetry, literature, art, music and Bible passages, as well as human encounter, to trace a divine thread running through the author’s life.
