A Children’s Advent Celebration

Make a space for Jesus

Do you have a corner, a space or a spot
For Mary and Joseph who don't need a lot?

Later will come
Innkeepers, shepherds and kings,
And, oh don't forget, angels with God's speedy wings.

Please make a corner, a space or a spot
to think smile and sing,
and share a whole lot.

Dear Friends,

This Advent the Benefice is engaging the community with a 'Sheep in Shops Trail'. As part of the fun we are inviting you and your friends and family to create a shoe box sized nativity scene for display in the Lady Chapel at St Mary's and at the high altar in St Anne's from Sunday 20 December.

This short programme will give you a week-by-week guide to the Christmas story and suggestions for who you should add to the scene and when. As Advent turns to the Christmas season we'll bring our creations into church and keep adding to them with the arrival of Jesus and the Kings.

I hope these activities will add to the delight of the season and bring you together with those you love as you grow in faith and love for God.

With Christmas wishes,

Tammy Tearoe

Before you begin

Get a shoebox or other small, sturdy cardboard box to use as your stable. Prepare the box with paints or texturing to give it some unique character. You may also want at this point to decide what materials you will use to create the figures you will add each week of the Advent and Christmas season. Remember anything can become art – be creative! (If you're needing some help getting started search the web for 'unique nativity scenes'.)

This weekly activity kicks off the first Sunday of Advent, 29 November, and can be completed at any point during the week. Gather your family and friends, read the passage of scripture and enjoy creating the character for the week, but you don't have to stop there – add animals, trees, rocks, stars…
